The monument here in the village of Choeung Ek is the final resting place of 8,000 Khmer skulls.
This area attracts 30% of all tourists to Cambodia each year, only 9 miles from Phnom Penh is the site where 20,000 Cambodians were tortured and murdered by the hands of the Khmer Rouge.
The sign hides the truth behind the "magic tree" The executioners where not allowed to use bullets to kill their victims, children and babies had their skulls crushed against the tree. Rags of the victims still litter the area to this day.

Open mass graves are everywhere, quite rightly left untouched as a reminder of the atrocities that occurred here.
During the Khmer Rouge era, 1975-1979  1.7 million Cambodians lost their lives in establishments such as this.
